My desire to know more about the development of honor and character in U.S. military officers led me in my doctoral research to the United States Military Academy (USMA)--West Point. An institution that provides officers for the largest branch in the military. It was also designated the primary source for teaching honor, ethics and professionalism in the U.S. Army. I was keenly interested in how West Point was teaching and living honor, ethics and character. This book attempted to answer the question: How does NCAA college football affect honor, character and academic rigor of cadets and their long-term service as officers in the U.S. Army? What I have discovered is what this book is about. This book identifies the really big issue that is corrupting West Point and the Army officer corps—big time NCAA College football and its effect on the Honor Code. West Point admits large numbers of athletes to the Point, many of them who do not meet academic, character or leadership standards. They have a massive impact on cadets trying to observe the Honor Code because they are allowed to live by a double standard. This has the unwanted side-effect of breeding cynicism.
